A Tribal Movement

For the Spring 2010 season, a tribal/ethnic theme was in full effect, and the runways were covered with styles, prints and accessories that spoke to the worldly influences that converged together for the season.
Tribal trends take their influences from many cultures, and are meshed together in a way that is unique to each designer. Balenciaga spun the look in a more aggressive, punk rock way, while Dries Van Noten took it in a traditional direction, wrapping skirts in a sarong fashion; Meanwhile, Proenza Schouler kept her tribal girl looking city chic.
We can’t forget the people that lend their heritage and customs to our fashion fancies. Most tribal and ethnic cultures are still third world countries, and their traditional dress, though inspiring to us for a season or two, has lasted them centuries, and need to be preserved.
Haiti is a country that is well-known for their traditional garb (especially their fabulous headpieces) and the devastation it has suffered is insurmountable. On ways to help restore and preserve this colorful nation, check out these links for more information: Doctors Without Borders; Habitat for Humanity; and the American Red Cross.
The importance of these cultural influences will be seen and felt all Spring, and this week we’ll highlight some of the strongest styles from the best collections. Stay tuned for more…
