Spring Cleaning

Feb 8, 2010

For many, this period marks the start of the Lunar New Year, a traditional holiday that is celebrated at the end of winter solstice and marks the beginning of spring.

Many cultures, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Tibetan, Vietnamese and Cambodian to name a few, celebrate the holiday in their own way, with their own significant traditions.  This includes everything from cleaning the house to sweep away ill-fortunes and make way for incoming good luck, to serving a special selection of dishes, to celebrations that highlight important themes such as lanterns, to family gatherings that include time-honored games and festivities.

This period of time coincides with the American tradition of Valentine’s Day, and for both, the color red is an important shade.

It is the color of love and romance, but it is also the color of luck, not to mention a signifier of the new spring season, as we make our way out of the cold winter months.

With spring right around the corner, this time of year is always exciting, whether you are celebrating centuries old traditions or honoring your loved ones.  It’s a time when the chill in the air feels temporary, and the longer days imply the start of a new season, a new beginning.

We at Hirshleifers wish all our customers a healthy and happy New Year and a happy Valentine’s Day, and hope the coming spring is filled with love, luck and joy.
