A Chance Encounter

Jun 23, 2010

It’s not often in life that an experience or journey can alter the course of one’s career, but for Ashley Pittman, that is exactly what happened.

During her time spent in East Africa working for the Clinton Foundation’s HIV/AIDS initiative in Rwanda, Pittman fell in love with the striking landscape and unforgettable culture.  It was here that the idea for a jewelry line was born.

After several unsuccessful attempts to find the skilled artisans and appropriate infrastructure to complete her vision of horned jewelry design and production, Pittman had a serendipitous encounter.  On a return visit to East Africa, she was booked to stay at the Ngong House, where she met the proprietor’s wife, Penny Winter.  Winter, who owns a small clothing shop,  featured the designs of local horn artists in her store.  Penny introduced Ashley to the talented artisans, and the two began a partnership a few months later.  Since then, Winter and Pittman have been producing distinct and stunning horn, bronze and gemstone jewelry from Kenya.

The handcrafted artistry of these designs are truly unique and an exquisite addition to any jewelry collection.  Stop by Hirsleifers now to see for yourself.
